Reupholstered Antique

chair before webPerhaps you have acquired a piece of furniture from a loved one. Or, perhaps you found a piece of furniture curbside or purchased one from a second-hand store. Either way, the furniture piece has good bones but needs some updating.

A client was looking to turn this chair into a comfortable spot in her sunroom. The problem was that the sunroom had mostly modern all-weather patio furniture in it. You’ll see from the photo below that all it took was an updated fabric choice and using double-piping instead of nailheads to modernize it. Now this chair fits in perfectly.

Reupholster and Repurpose

Remember those utility chairs that all offices had back in the 60′s & 70′s?  They had silver aluminum frames and the seat and back were mostly black or sometimes green naughahyde. In the 80′s and 90′s these chairs were passed over for sleeker, more ergonomic office chairs–except in government or educational settings. They sit well because the metal structural piece underneath the foam has an imprint of a rear-end fashioned into them rather than a square metal piece.

I came across three of these utility chairs for free, being tossed out when a house was sold. The foam cushions were crumbling through the little air holes in the naughahyde, getting yellow dust all over the place.  However, the frames were in great shape so I spray-painted them in a metallic brown-gray color.  I  decided to reupholster them in a neutral, yet fun pattern.  They turned out great, ready for their staging debut beside a glass and metallic computer desk. Three more pieces not added to a landfill that should last for many more years.

Home Hobbies

How do you organize your hobbies, crafts, or art projects? Some people like to have everything at their fingertips, while others like a clean look.  Consider how easily you can find things, how accessible your things are, and how likely are you to finish the project?

I converted my Family Room Over the Garage (FROG) into a craft and hobby room. Since I do upholstery, I need a space to accommodate all of my tools and supplies.  I also am into (addicted?) rubber stamping and need a flat work space.  My projects are ongoing, but when I don’t have the time, I like to store my supplies away until I do have the time. I have baskets, bins and cabinets that keep everything I need within reach.  This space may not work for you, but it fits like a glove for me.

Scavenger Hunt

When searching for the pieces that tie a room together, where do we go?  Probably where most people go….the  discount stores, the clearance racks, the resale shops (Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul), as well as garage sales and flea markets. We even scour our own storage spaces (basements, attics, garages)seeking to repurpose what we already have. We don’t pay full price for anything and the less the price, the more satisfied we feel.

Libby and I (Gina) each are talented in our own way.  Libby can repair all kinds of scratches on furniture legs or artwork frames. She has a knack for figuring out a different way to use a particular item. She’ll hang most anything on a wall:  a child’s sled, cross country skiis, an airplane propeller, etc. Libby is an expert at floral design, whipping up foliage in any kind of container.  I (Gina), on the other hand, can reupholster just about anything. You’d be amazed at what I have found on the curb that (after reupholstering) is utilized as a main furniture piece in my house. We both know exactly what it takes to make a house feel like a home—and for as little money as possible.  That’s why Premiere Home Stagers services are affordable.  We are just like you!
