Let’s say your house is for sale. If this is the first wall that prospective buyers see when entering your house during a showing or open house, what first impression are you silently saying? Perhaps the following:
This is your house. Which means that people will tend to view it as belonging to you rather than visualize themselves living here. It also means that people are more reluctant to want to change anything because it’s not their house.
Prospective buyers will linger at this wall and look at all your cute baby photos. They will then spend less time looking at the great features this house has to offer. They will offer comments about how their children have the same outfit or how nice/happy/content the parents look in the photo. If they are from the same city, they will wonder whether they know you or if you have friends in common. They will wonder where the outdoor photos are taken and if it’s a vacation spot, they will take a trip down memory lane, remembering their vacation as well.
So…..what to do? Remove most personal photos–especially in the main living areas of the home. It’s fine to include a couple of photos in an office OR the baby’s room OR perhaps in the family room. But prospective buyers need to visualize themselves living there and they can’t do that with you staring at them.
